More than a century of the history of F\u00e1tima, its pilgrims and pilgrimages can now be explored through 408 photographs brought together in a new publication.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

F\u00e1tima escrita com luz: a fotografia no Arquivo do Santu\u00e1rio de F\u00e1tima<\/em><\/em>, by photographer Lu\u00eds Pav\u00e3o<\/strong>, features a selection of images by different photographers held in the Archive of the Sanctuary of F\u00e1tima. The book will be presented on 12 September<\/strong>, at 5:00 pm<\/strong>, in the foyer of the Paul VI Pastoral Centre<\/strong>, and is part of the Art and Heritage collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a foreword by Marco Daniel Duarte<\/strong>, Director of the Academy for Studies of the Sanctuary of F\u00e1tima, the publication uses photography to trace the history of the F\u00e1tima phenomenon, giving particular prominence to its protagonists: the pilgrims, the crowds and moments of prayer and devotion<\/strong>, while also documenting the successive transformations of the Sanctuary and Portuguese society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The photographs were selected according to the relevance of the events they document, their human and social content, the representation of the different photographers whose work is preserved in the Archive, as well as the originality, significance and aesthetic quality of the images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The publication is organised into five chronological chapters covering the period from 1917 to 2021<\/strong>, tracing the evolution of the Sanctuary, the pilgrimages and photographic practices. A sixth chapter is devoted to the journeys of the Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of F\u00e1tima<\/strong>, which began in 1947, and to photographs documenting its travels throughout Portugal and around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book also reflects Lu\u00eds Pav\u00e3o\u2019s extensive knowledge of this photographic heritage. Between 1999 and 2005, the photographer collaborated with what was then the Audiovisual Department of the Sanctuary Archive on the preservation, organisation, description and digitisation of its photographic collections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than simply documenting events, these images preserve faces, gestures, journeys, encounters and different ways of experiencing pilgrimage<\/strong>. Over more than a hundred years, photography has thus become part of the very memory of F\u00e1tima and of those who journey there as pilgrims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Marco Daniel Duarte summarises in the book\u2019s foreword, \u201cF\u00e1tima would not be the same without photography.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
