Leaving Constância via the bridge built over the River Zêzere in the 19th century, the route takes in the riverside landscape, where river activity predominates. Fishing boats coexist with a variety of fauna and flora, with various pleasant spots offering great conditions for birdwatching. Nature and culture here are inseparable, revealing the historical and contemporary importance of the Tagus river basin. Characteristic towns and villages emerge in the aquatic landscape of each of the banks. The Almourol Castle, set on a small island in the riverbed, surprises us in the Praia do Ribatejo. Built by the Knights Templar in the 12th century, it was part of the Tagus defence line. This medieval fortification, with its walls and high keep, is open to visitors. In Vila Nova da Barquinha, by the river, the Almourol Contemporary Sculpture Park expresses the relationship between art and nature. Heading north towards the mountains and the Sanctuary of Fátima, the route passes through Entroncamento, an urban centre formed at the crossroads of railway lines. Here you can visit the National Railway Museum or rest in the Bonito Green Park. Along country lanes and roads, the route arrives in Torres Novas, the old town, where visitors can visit the Castle and the Carlos Reis Municipal Museum and enjoy the scenery of the riverside area bathed by the River Almonda.
